Listening to Sam Smith’s ‘I’m not the only one’ every night, watched ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ thrice, working out on his abs whenever he gets a day off, Lee Kikwang who recently became the MC of Onstyle’s Style Log has an interest in composing and is waiting for the day he gets to act in a role where he grows in becoming a man. Due to BEAST’s vigorous overseas promotions, sometimes he appears in varieties like ‘Laws of the Jungle’. “There is no time to invest in being a better man. When looking at Lee Kikwang, it seems like naturally the admiration for being ‘pretty’ comes out. But as a man, the compliment ‘pretty’ isn’t (worth) much? No, I’m thankful. Although I would love to hear ‘cool/suave’ more than ‘pretty’, the word ‘pretty’ has a good connotation doesn’t it. The blond is really beautiful. I have never dyed my hair to a bright color and I wanted to try it once so I dyed it blond. It hasn’t been a month yet. Looking at it, you had black hair on “Laws of the Jungle”. “Laws of the Jungle” has been a program that I’ve liked since before. People around me ask ‘Why do you put yourself through hardship’ but I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be alright’; I grew up in the countryside so I like shows that enjoy nature. When else would I be able to experience an uninhabited island, or an outback. In an uninhabited island where you can’t see anything at all without the lights, the darkness is something more interesting than I thought it was.

I am originally close to 4MINUTE’s Gayoonie, and I met Sangwoo hyung for the first time through the show but we became close quickly. Style Log is a show that introduces hip, hot and trendy stuff. It’ll be great if people who have interest in fashion or fashionable life tune in. Did you always have an interest in fashion? Yes. I’ve always had an interest in clothes but lately I’ve had an interest in interior, design, art, photographs etc. I’m always looking at things on SNS such as Instagram, Facebook. Through Style Log we see Lee Kikwang’s daily life routine. When I’m at home, watching soccer or listening to music? When I’m not working, I play soccer , I head to the gym, I work on songs or I stay at home and watch the television. Similar to what others do.
What kind of music are you into lately? I like listening to R&B. The musician I’ve been listening to lately is Sam Smith. Every night, I’ll listen to his album, his voice really touches me. If you listen to the songs at night, it’s such a killer. ‘Stay with me’ is a song that I really like. There’s a version with a Marie J Blige featuring but I like the version where he’s singing alone. There song captivates someone. If Lee Kikwang releases a solo album, will we be able to hear something like one of Sam Smith’s? It would be really great if I could release something of Sam Smith’s level. There are people who like listening to my voice. If I have a solo album, it’ll probably be one with strong emotions.
Do you also like emotional movies? The movies I like are those that have good OST and the images are of tremendous quality. I really enjoyed watching ‘Her’ and I’ve seen ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ thrice. Watching the grandeur of the nature was great, and the music is good too. Above it all, the last scene is the highlight. It was moving. You are someone with greed for acting right? Standing on stage as an artist, being able to breathe together with the fans brings about a surge of real adrenaline. But the fun in acting is a little different. Shall I say it is the building of the life’s various characters one by one in me. Gradually being able to be natural shows I’m developing and there’s a pride in that. It is different from standing on stage as BEAST since I am concerned about it and have to achieve it by myself so the drive for success is a little different too. But I’m not at a stage where I’m already able to do it enjoyably. Acting is hard and I’m still learning about it. Up till now, you have mainly taken on the roles of a young male but it seems like you want roles that are more manly/adult. When I smile/laugh, I look like a kid so up till now I get a lot of offers for a character as a young man. For this, I think it’s definitely something I need to overcome. Even so, your lips are very sexy. Seems like thick lips that are the secretion of testosterone? I hear those from time to time, haha.

Which physical area are you most confident in? My chest and my back. My chest and my back are larger compared to my body. Therefore, it makes my body looks bigger and thicker. When you’re working out and when you’re dancing, are the muscles that get trained different? The parts that are being used are different. For me, muscles in my shoulder, back and arm can be made and grown quickly but it’s harder for my abs so I work out with exercises focused on the abs. Lately I’m concentrating on exercises for my core and lower body. I’m trying to maintain my body frame with my muscles. If I only play soccer, my body will become really skinny and I could look gaunt so I do weight training to maintain my muscles.
Your skin texture looks really smooth like a baby and your skin looks elastic. What’s your secret? I go to a dermatologist and I take care of my skin. Since I am firstly, an entertainer. I am gifted with that skin and I don’t really have trouble (spots) but I get tanned easily under the sun so I take care of my skin with skin lightening routine. When you use a lot of makeup, it seems like cleansing would be something you would pay attention to. Yes, using foam cleansing, I wash till the ‘ppodeuk ppodeuk’ sound comes out. Shiseido Perfect Whip seems the mildest of all.
I’m curious about your ideal type. If you had to choose between a woman’s body or skin, which would you choose? Um, I don’t think you could choose either one. Body and skin, how could you just choose one out of the two? Of course. What type of make up on a woman attracts you? Something that isn’t overdone. Like she’s made up but not made up. Now that you’re 26, you’ve realized your dream once. Does it seem like it? I don’t think I’ve achieved it yet. What is your dream? To be a happy person. This isn’t just something I’m saying but I mean it sincerely. Are you saying you aren’t happy yet? I want to feel even happier. Lately I’ve been thinking that happiness isn’t something that much. Recently I headed to Bangkok for a holiday, the people didn’t know who I am so I was able to do what I wanted to do, I could eat whenever I wanted to eat, I could have conversations with the hyungs in a café; although these seem like nothing much, to me it is a huge kind of happiness. I want to be able to feel happiness from the minor things in daily life. Even so, you’ve realized your debut dream right? Ah, if we’re talking about those kind of dreams, I’ve realized it. I want to be acknowledged more than I am now. Regarding the work I do, my productions, the songs I make and sing; when I get acknowledged for those, it will be a truly great feeling.
In order to gain acknowledgement, what have you been focusing on the most? I am currently immersed in producing. In the last album, we included one of my songs, and I want to be able to include my song(s) in the new BEAST album too so I’m working hard on that. If it’s according to my wishes, it would be released this year but I don’t know how it will go. Being able to sing and dance together to a song I made is a special kind of happiness and pride. In the future, do you want to live as a creator or as an actor? I want to be an all-rounder entertainer. On the stage, like a singer; during a drama filming, reminiscent of an actor; during photoshoots, like a model. It is something that must be the case but to properly do that is difficult. I think that to do my best at each of this is an investment for myself.
